THE ASSAMESE LANGUAGE
Have you ever wondered, which language is the most closest language to standard Bengali aside from the Bengali dialects. Well there is one language that is very close to the Bengali language. The language is written using the Bengali-Assamese script and Bengali-Assamese Alphabet.
The language is the Assamese language.
It is very close to Bengali in terms of language. Northern Bengali dialect of Rangpur have some level of mutual intelligibility with the Assamese language.
The Assamese language is the official language of Assam, a state in North eastern india.
The Assamese language is spoken by Assamese people and their culture is very similar to the culture of Bengali people.
The Assamese language comes from the Kamarupi dialect of eastern Magadhi Prakit. Like Bengali, Assamese is an Indo Aryan language from the Indo European language family. Assamese language evolved atleast before 7th century. Today the Assamese language is considered a sister language of the Bengali language.
The Assamese language has been heavily influenced by Sanskrit. Today the Assamese language has 15 million native speakers. But around 8 million people learned Assamese language as a second or third language making the total number of speakers at around 23 million people. The native speakers of Bengali language, can easily learn the Assamese language as a second or third language. The native speakers of the Assamese language call their language “অসমীয়া ভাষা”.
