How Bangladesh Get Its Name?
Have you ever wondered how Bangladesh got it’s name? Many of you may say that it’s the combination of two words " Bangla " the language and "Desh" which means country or land. The meaning of Bangladesh is the land or country of the Bengalis.
But where does the word Bangla or Bangali comes from? Well thousands of years ago, When the world was in neolithic age the Indian subcontinent discovered farming around that time. After that new people came to the subcontinent known as the Indo -Aryans. Then the Aryan Invasion of India occurred,after which they settled in various regions including Bengal. The first Kingdom to appear in modern day in Bangladesh was the Kingdom of Vanga. From which Bangla or Bengal derives from. To be clear the Kingdom of Vanga gave Bengal it’s name, which then the Persians called" Bangalah" to that region (Bengal). From there we get Bangla and Bangali in the modern day. But Bengali civilization has been here for more than 4000 years. Now we know how Bengal got it’s name.
But how did it gets it’s language which is Bengali or Bangla? Well back to the ancient Kingdom of Vanga, which during their era, they spoke Vedic Sanskrit which slowly evolved into classical Sanskrit which in eastern South Asia evolved into Magadhi Prakit. Which then evolved into Bengali -Assamese, then Into Bengali or Bangla during the Pala Kingdom. It was also under the Bengali Palas that the Bengali script was created. So basically in summary Bengali come from Sanskrit after numerous evolutions.Pretty cool right?
